Currently, Dongducheon is changing. More than half of the US forces from Camp Casey moved to Camp Humphreys in 2004 according to the plan to relocate US forces stationed in Dongducheon to Pyeongtaek by 2016. Thus Camp Bosan, located in front of Camp Casey in Bosan-dong, Dongducheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, has taken a different phase. It is the phenomenon of economic hollowing out between the relocation of the US military and the redevelopment. The return of Camp Casey in the northernmost part of Gyeonggi-do, is being delayed because the US Artillery Brigade must remain in the northern area of the Han River. The streets of Camp Bosan are devastated amid a situation where the number of US troops has plummeted and the new town development plan cannot be realized. It is interesting that the character of Bosan with aspects of a multi-cultural and multi-racial society, which was rare in Korea, led foreign workers back to Bosan from an early age. Multinational migrant workers are coming into the vacant residences and shops amid the relocation of US troops. In particular, the Nigerian Igbos account for more than 80% of the foreign residents in Bosan-dong and Saengyeon-dong, and are forming their own ‘African Town’ in Bosan-dong based on their strong cultural identity. Therefore, understanding and harmony between the US military, African immigrants, and the local people are emerging as important tasks. Camp Bosan combines the characteristics of a multicultural city with its historicity. ‘Home Town Bosan Tour’ proposes a different way to look at the newly changing appearance of Dongducheon and the hidden history and places of Dongducheon through music and poetry. Tour locations encompass the history of military base towns in the past, the new multicultural regionality that African immigrants are currently inflowing, and the ecological environment of Bosan-dong that needs to be protected. The tour proposes to look at and experience the heritage of Dongducheon from the past image of Dongducheon. The tour will be held in May, July and September. Poet Chung Yongkook and musician Rainbow99 are participating in the tour, held on May 27th.
