CLEANING PROJECT

Venue: Bosan-dong, Dongducheon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea
Dates: March 16, 2024 - Ongoing
Curated by: Space AfroAsia and IPOB (Indigenous People of Biafra) Korea

The Performative Cleaning Project, carried out four times a year in Dongducheon, aims to address the significant issue of trash accumulation in African towns and combat the resulting negative sentiment towards Africans, often blamed due to unfamiliarity with waste separation practices. Launched this year by Afro Asia in collaboration with members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the initiative began in Bosan-dong, an area known as an African town.
This project not only seeks to clean the area but also to incorporate artistic elements into the cleaning process, turning it into a performative act. By doing so, it aims to improve community relations and enhance the image of Africans in the region. In the future, the project plans to involve more members of the Korean community and evolve into a collective cleaning performance, engaging the community through creative and artistic expressions. This approach aims to foster greater understanding and solidarity between Korean and African residents, creating a shared sense of responsibility and appreciation for the community.
